Being Human Foundation

The Being Human Foundation is a Mumbai based charity, founded by Bollywood star Salman Khan in 2007, that provides education and healthcare services for the underprivileged in India. The organization is primarily funded by the sales of Being Human-Branded merchandise, which amounted to sales of Rs 2460 crore till 2018 August.

The foundations perform many charitable activities. It funds the education of 200 children at the Akshara High School in Mumbai and another 300 through Aseema, a Mumbai based non-profit. The foundation supports the VEER initiative, a program to train differently-abled people. As of December 2015, the program has trained 1909 individuals, 1194 of whom have gained employment. The organization has set up programs to improve basic skills for students and career development centers.

Being Human has provided funding to treat children with congenital heart defects and craniofacial deformities. It has provided drought relief in Maharashtra and blankets for flood victims in Kashmir, conducted surgeries, and helped conduct bone marrow donor registration camps in India.

In 2018, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai threatened to blacklist the foundation for falling to set up dialysis machines in Bandra. The project was a public-private partnership where the municipal government would provide the space while the foundation was to maintain and staff the low-cost dialysis facility. The foundation’s representative denied that the organization signed any formal contract with the civic body.

Fundings: The charity accepts direct donations, but it is primarily funded by 8-10% share of their sales of Being Human-branded clothing, manufactured and marketed by Mandhana Industries, as a licensing fee for the use of charity’s name as a brand. The charity share in 2016 was approximately INR3 crore from the sales revenue of nearly INR30 crore. A quarter of the brand’s revenue comes from overseas sales and a tenth of the revenue comes from online sales.

On June 23, 2017, PVR Cinemas announced a partnership with the foundation, allowing its customers to donate two rupees whenever purchasing a movie ticket.

Salman Khan, Bollywood’s most reliable star, is not an easy man to interview.

As a Business Standard journalist who met him in January just before the release of his film, Jai Ho, recalls, the actor behaved unpredictably, evaded questions and looked uninterested, even bored.

Five minutes after walking in, he did not acknowledge her. Instead, he fetched food on a plate, played a few video clips of the film and halfheartedly answered their queries.

But when the reporter asked Salman Khan about Being Human, his apparels brand that helps fund philanthropic trust, he became focussed, sat up straight in his chair and rattled off expansion plans.

“Whatever we do has to stick with the people. There is no scope for failure,” the actor said. “ He lives and breathes the brand,” says Kunal Mehta, Vice President of business development and marketing at Being Human Clothing, a division of garments company Mandhana Industries.

Every design in the brand’s collection has to be approved by the actor, he adds. Salman makes it a point to sport Being Human products everywhere: on the sets, at events and even court appearances. Those who have worked with Salman claim that “ Being Human and Salman are synonymous”.

In fact, charity is now so much a part of his persona that when Jai Ho was slammed for its casting, jokes circulated on the social media that “the film was a philanthropic exercise to generate employment for a dozen retired actors”.

For brand endorsements, he gets about Rs 7 crore. The foundation was initially funded by Salman putting in his money, says Alvira.

To increase its reach and corpus, he started selling art and merchandise, the royalties from which go to the foundation. He next plans to set up cafes, gyms and a production house that will raise money for the foundation. Salman was available for comments for this report.
